Pope Urban IV was born Jacques Pantaléon in Troyes, France in 1195. He served as Bishop of Verdun from 1222 to 1227, Bishop of Ostia and Velletri from 1227 to 1244, and Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina from 1244 to 1254. He was elected Pope on August 12, 1261.
