John Major served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1992 to 1997. A Conservative politician, he succeeded Margaret Thatcher and is remembered for leading the country through a period of economic recession in the early 1990s. Major was also instrumental in achieving a lasting peace settlement in Northern Ireland with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.
