Valens (AD 337-378) was the Eastern Roman Emperor from AD 364 to 378, ruling concurrently with Valentinian I in the West. The two brothers divided the Roman Empire in AD 364, and Valentinian ruled from Milan in Italy, while Valens ruled from Constantinople in the East. Valens was a military man, and he spent most of his reign fighting wars on the eastern frontier against the Persians.
