Soviet scientist Valery Legasov was the chief investigator of the Chernobyl disaster. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and a professor at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. Legasov played a key role in the investigation of the disaster and in the development of measures to prevent future accidents. He died in 1988, two years after the Chernobyl disaster.
