Woodhull went from rags to riches twice. She was born into poverty in 1838 and worked as a prostitute and spiritualist before becoming a suffragist and women's rights activist. She was also a successful businesswoman, running a brokerage firm and a newspaper. However, she lost all of her money in the Panic of 1873 and was forced to declare bankruptcy. She later regained her wealth and became a wealthy socialite.
