Vladimir Tismăneanu was born on July 4, 1951 in Bucharest, Romania. He is a Romanian-American political scientist and historian, known for his studies of post-communist transition and democratization. He is currently the Thomas G. Watson, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Romanian Studies and director of the Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies at the University of Maryland, College Park.
