Wallace Fard Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam, arrived in Detroit in 1930 with an ambiguous background. He claimed to be a merchant from Mecca, but his true identity is unknown. He quickly gained a following among Detroit's African American community, and by 1934 he had established the Nation of Islam as a major religious and political organization.
