Wallace Fard Muhammad is believed to have been born in 1877, though his true origins are unknown. He was raised in Georgia and was a traveling salesman before founding the Nation of Islam in 1930. Muhammad preached that black Americans were the original inhabitants of the world and that they had been enslaved by whites. He also claimed to be the Mahdi, the Muslim messiah.
