The Nation of Islam was a religious and political organization founded by Wallace Fard Muhammad in Detroit in 1930. After Fard's mysterious disappearance in 1934, the leadership of the Nation of Islam passed to Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad was a charismatic leader who attracted many followers to the Nation of Islam, which grew to become a major force in the African-American community.
