German-American philosopher Walter Kaufmann was born in Freiburg, Germany, in 1921. He immigrated to the United States in 1939 and became a naturalized citizen in 1944. Kaufmann taught at Princeton University for over 30 years and is best known for his work on existentialism, Nietzsche, and Hegel. He died in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1980.
