Ulbricht resided in the Soviet Union from 1937 to 1945. He was a member of the German Communist Party and was sent to the Soviet Union after the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933. He worked in the Soviet Union for the Comintern, the international organization of communist parties. Ulbricht returned to Germany in 1945 and became a leading figure in the East German government.
