In 1920, Walter Ulbricht joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). He quickly rose through the ranks and became a leading figure in the party. In 1933, when the Nazis came to power, Ulbricht was forced to flee Germany. He spent the next few years in exile, first in the Soviet Union and then in France.
