The Socialist Unity Party of Germany was formed in 1946. It was the result of a merger between the Communist Party of Germany and the Social Democratic Party of Germany. The party was led by Walter Ulbricht and was the ruling party of East Germany from 1949 to 1990. The party was dissolved in 1990 when East and West Germany were reunited.
