Answer
After Warren E. Burger resigned as Chief Justice of the United States on 31 December 1986, President Ronald Reagan appointed William H. Rehnquist to succeed him. Rehnquist had been serving as Associate Justice since 1971, and had been widely regarded as the most likely successor to Burger. Rehnquist was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 65-33, and took office on 26 January 1987.
