As the war turned against Germany, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris expanded his clandestine opposition to Hitler. He had already begun to pass information to the Allies, but he now began to work with other anti-Hitler conspirators to overthrow the Nazi government. Canaris was ultimately unsuccessful, however, and he was executed by the Nazis in April 1945.
