Wilhelm Pieck served as the chairman of the German Communist Party for four years, from 1935 to 1939. During his time as chairman, the party was outlawed by the Nazi government and Pieck was forced to go into hiding. He continued to lead the party from exile, and after the end of World War II, he became the first president of East Germany.
