Wilhelm Pieck was a communist politician who served as the first President of East Germany from 1949 to 1960. He was also a co-founder of the German Communist Party (KPD) in 1918 and served as its leader from 1925 to 1933. After the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, Pieck fled to the Soviet Union, where he remained until 1945.
