William Pitt the Younger, who was the prime minister at the time, had initially been in favour of the French Revolution, but became opposed to it after the execution of King Louis XVI. In 1794, the Portland Whigs joined with Pitt's government to form a coalition, which was known as the'Ministry of All the Talents'.
