John William Strutt, also known as Lord Rayleigh, collaborated with William Ramsay to discover argon. In 1894, Rayleigh and Ramsay were investigating the density of nitrogen gas. They found that nitrogen gas obtained from the atmosphere was denser than nitrogen gas obtained from chemical compounds. This led them to conclude that there was another gas present in the atmosphere that was denser than nitrogen.
