Broughton died on 14 March 1821 at the age of 75. He had been suffering from ill health for several years, and his death was attributed to apoplexy. Broughton was a prominent figure in the Anglican Church in the early 19th century, and his death was widely mourned. He was succeeded as Archbishop of Canterbury by William Howley.
