From 1856 until his death, Bennett was Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing the Cambridge University Musical Society and the Cambridge University Glee Club, as well as in promoting the study of music at the university. He also wrote a number of works for the university, including the cantata "The May Queen" and the "Cambridge Te Deum".
