Witold Pilecki was a Polish military officer who served in the Defense of Poland against the German invasion in 1939. He was captured by the Germans and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he volunteered to be a prisoner in order to gather intelligence for the Polish resistance. After escaping from Auschwitz, Pilecki joined the Polish Home Army and fought in the Warsaw Uprising.
