Władysław Szpilman was a Polish pianist and composer who became a Holocaust survivor after he was forced to play for Nazi officers in Warsaw during the Second World War. Szpilman was born in 1911 in Sosnowiec, Poland, and studied music at the Warsaw Conservatory. He made his professional debut in 1933 and quickly became one of the most popular pianists in Poland.
