C. N. Annadurai was born into a middle-class Tamil Brahmin family in the village of Thirukkurungudi, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, C. N. Muthu, was a lawyer, and his mother, M. S. Rukmini, was a housewife. Annadurai had three brothers and two sisters. He attended the Madras Christian College and the Law College of the University of Madras. He practiced law in Madras before entering politics.
