Xuanzang's Sanskrit Dharma name was Mōkṣadeva, which means "God of Salvation". He was a Chinese Buddhist monk who lived from 602 to 664 CE. He traveled to India and spent 17 years there studying Buddhist texts and philosophy. He translated more than 750 Buddhist texts from Sanskrit into Chinese. His work had a profound influence on the development of Buddhism in China.
