Xuanzang developed the desire to visit India while he was a Buddhist monk in Chang'an. He was inspired by the stories of the Buddhist monks who had travelled to India before him, and he wanted to learn more about the Buddha's teachings and to see the places where he had lived. Xuanzang set off on his journey in 629, and he returned to China in 645.
