General Yakubu Gowon was a Nigerian military leader who served as the Head of State of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. He was born in Zungeru, Northern Nigeria, in 1934. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1957 and rose through the ranks to become a general. He was appointed Head of State by a military junta in 1966 and led Nigeria through the Nigerian Civil War.
