Pugachev was born into a poor peasant family and became a Cossack of the Yaik Cossacks, where he rose to the rank of ataman, or leader. He led an uprising of the Yaik Cossacks against Russian rule in 1773-1775, during which he declared himself to be Tsar Peter III. The uprising was ultimately defeated, and Pugachev was captured and executed.
