Yemelyan Pugachev was a Cossack leader who led a major peasant revolt against the Russian Empire in the mid-18th century. He was born in 1742 in a village in Siberia, and he joined the Cossacks in 1757. In 1773, he led a group of Cossacks and peasants in a revolt against the Russian government.
