In 1584, Cossack chieftain Yermak Timofeyevich, known for his conquest of the Siberian Khanate, met an unfortunate end. While crossing a frozen river during his campaign against the Kuchum Khan, he tragically fell through a hole in the thin ice and drowned, despite the valiant efforts of his men to save him.
