Zephaniah Kingsley Jr. was born in England, where he was raised as a Quaker. After becoming a Methodist, he moved to Jamaica in 1786 and became a successful planter. He owned over 500 slaves and was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery. He died in 1855 in Jamaica.
