Abd al-Karim Qasim came to power by overthrowing the monarchy in Iraq in 1958. He was a member of the Free Officers Movement, a group of military officers who opposed the monarchy. The Free Officers Movement overthrew the monarchy in a coup d'état on July 14, 1958, and Qasim became the prime minister of Iraq. He ruled Iraq until 1963, when he was overthrown in a coup d'état.
