Agostinho Neto became the first president of Angola in 1975. He was a poet and a revolutionary who had fought for independence from Portugal. Neto was a Marxist-Leninist and he oversaw the creation of a single-party state in Angola. He died in 1979 and was succeeded by José Eduardo dos Santos.
