Alfonso XII was born in Madrid, Spain. He was the son of Queen Isabella II and Francisco de Asís, Duke of Cádiz. Alfonso XII succeeded his mother to the throne in 1874 after she was deposed in a coup d'état. He ruled Spain until his death in 1885.
