Antinous was born in 111 AD in Bithynia, Asia Minor. He was a young man who was discovered by Hadrian, the Roman emperor, while on a hunting trip in Bithynia. Hadrian was immediately smitten with Antinous and took him back to Rome with him. Antinous became Hadrian's favorite and was given many important positions in the Roman government. He was also Hadrian's lover and the two men were inseparable.
