According to the Mahāvaṃsa, Anuradhapura was founded in 437 BCE by Panduvas Devaraja, the first king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for more than 1,000 years and was the site of many important Buddhist monuments.
