Aslan Maskhadov was elected as the president of Chechnya in 1997. He was the first democratically elected president of Chechnya and served in the position until his death in 2005. Maskhadov was a prominent figure in the First Chechen War and was seen as a moderate leader who was committed to peace. However, he was unable to bring peace to Chechnya and was eventually killed by Russian forces.
