The KGB, the Soviet Union's secret police, brought Babrak Karmal to Moscow before the Soviet Union intervened in Afghanistan. Karmal was a communist leader who had been exiled from Afghanistan by the Afghan government. The KGB brought him to Moscow in order to convince him to return to Afghanistan and lead a communist coup against the government.
