Baybars succeeded Qutuz, the Mamluk Sultan, after Qutuz was killed in the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260. Baybars was a Turkic slave who had risen through the ranks of the Mamluk military. He was a skilled military leader and a capable administrator. Baybars ruled Egypt for twenty-five years and oversaw a period of great prosperity and military expansion.
