The Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias demonstrated the most effective southward ship route to India by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. This route was much shorter than the traditional route around Africa's west coast, and it allowed ships to avoid the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Guinea.
