Bartolomeu Dias (1450–1500) was a Portuguese navigator and explorer who was the first European to round the Cape of Good Hope, the southern tip of Africa. His voyage opened up the sea route from Europe to Asia and led to the establishment of the Portuguese Empire in Africa and India.
