Bhaktisiddhanta was a reformer of Gaudiya Vaishnavism who was critical of the casteism of smarta brahmins, as well as the sensualised practices of numerous Gaudiya Vaishnavism spin-offs. He advocated a more spiritual and devotional approach to the religion, and sought to return to the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.
