Answer
In 2011, Brian Cowen resigned as the leader of Fianna Fáil. He had been the party's leader since 2002 and had been Taoiseach, or Prime Minister, of Ireland since 2008. Cowen's resignation came in the wake of the financial crisis in Ireland, which had led to a deep recession and a bailout of the Irish banking system by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
