Carolyn S. Shoemaker was an astronomer who was known for her work on comets. She discovered or co-discovered over 30 comets, including the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that collided with Jupiter in 1994. Shoemaker was also a co-founder of the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) program, which is designed to detect and track asteroids that could potentially impact Earth.
