The Carolingian dynasty was a Frankish dynasty that ruled western and central Europe from the late 7th century to the 9th century. The dynasty was founded by Pepin the Short, the son of Charles Martel, in 751. Pepin deposed the last Merovingian king, Childeric III, and became king of the Franks. Pepin's son, Charlemagne, was crowned emperor in 800.
