Christian IV of Denmark and Norway (1577-1648) ascended the throne in 1588, at the age of 11. He was the eldest son of Frederick II and Sophia of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. Christian IV was a capable and ambitious ruler, and he oversaw a period of great prosperity and expansion for Denmark-Norway.
