In order to evade arrest and prosecution, Corneliu Codreanu, the founder of the Iron Guard, went underground and delegated leadership to Gheorghe Cantacuzino-Grănicerul. Cantacuzino-Grănicerul was a former officer in the Romanian Army and a staunch supporter of Codreanu's nationalist and anti-Semitic policies.
