Dawda Jawara, the first President of The Gambia, died on 27 August 2019 in the United States. He was 95. Jawara ruled The Gambia from its independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 until he was overthrown in a military coup in 1994. He lived in exile in Senegal after the coup and returned to The Gambia in 2017.
