Æthelwold was a Saxon prince who challenged Edward the Elder for the throne of Wessex. Edward had succeeded his father, Æthelstan, who had unified the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England. Æthelwold was the son of King Edmund I and had been passed over for the throne in favor of his younger brother, Æthelstan.
