Æthelred I, also called Æthelred the Unready, was the King of Wessex from 865 to 871. He was the son of King Æthelwulf and was crowned king at the age of nine. Æthelred was a weak king and was unable to defend Wessex from the Viking invasions. He was killed in battle in 871 and was succeeded by his brother Alfred the Great.
